The Story
Felting

In earlier centuries felt was the basic material of hatmakers, it was made of animal hairs, especially sheep wool and rabbit hairs. After cleaning, the wool was degreased in warm water with ash lye, then after drying it was taken apart to fibres and combed. In the course of felting the hairs were compressed by steaming and adding water, then it was wrapped in cloth and thoroughly matted, condensed, while it was watered with hot water. The spreading of industrially manufactured hats suppressed the profession of hatmaking.

Nowadays felt makers, attracted towards handicraft, make articles of personal use and decorative objects – slippers, wall ornaments, rugs – as well as garment accessories – bags, buckles, shakos.
