Room
Benefits

The room unfolds over two levels, apartment style, with a welcoming lobby downstairs and a cozy attic bedroom above. The extensible sofa in the living area can easily become an extra bed, making the space ideal for longer stays or small families. Upstairs, shades of deep and dusty blue create a calm, almost dreamlike atmosphere beneath the wooden beams. Inspired by the local tradition of furniture painting, the room pays homage to the delicate craft of woodpainting through its ornamental details, hand-finished textures and carefully chosen decorative elements that bring the spirit of Transylvanian artisanship into a contemporary, comfortable setting.

The Story
Carpentry

The joiner's trade is specialized in manufacturing furniture, cabinets, garment chests and shelves. In former centuries the young joiners who freshly acquired the joiner's craft wandered regularly to get to know the styles and innovations throughout Europe.

The profession separated from carpentry has specialized further in the past centuries. The painter-joiners decorated the peasant furniture manufactured with joinery techniques with painting of Gothic and Renaissance taste. The cabinet-makers satisfied the demands of the nobility and the bourgeoisie by making furniture decorated with inlaid, carved and turned, Baroque, Rococo and Classicist style elements, requiring high professional skills. At the construction work of the past one and a half century there has been an ever greater need of the building joiners' work – frames, doors and windows –, thus a newer field has emerged within the profession.

The Sütő family of Vargyas was engaged in carpentry from the end of the 16th century, and in painting from the second half of the 17th century. Their family house is open to the public, where you can learn about the traditions of Szekler furniture painting.
